WEAVING MATTER OUT OF PLACE
WOVEN SCULPTURE
In response to the subject matter ‘Weaving Matter Out of Place’, this sculpture explores the notions of using unconventional materials in western contemporary society and ultimately the marriage of history, future, tradition and technology.
The use of found, dilapidated and recycled materials in art and design today has become prominent due to high levels of consumption and the significance of the materials. The exploration of man-made human residue, which has remained in the material after being disposed of, charges the new design with significance that goes beyond one humans capacity. It combines a continuous reproduction and reuse of materials, construction processes and concept. The use of these materials additionally provides insight into ethical and environmental issues surrounding the consumption of materialistic goods.
The knowledge of sustainable environmental issues regarding obsolescence and consumption urges me to use these materials, yet still ultimately create an original piece of work driven by concept. I have reused materials found across Sydney suburb council picks, Reverse Garbage Marrickville and anywhere that can be found. I feel the materials express and reflect upon human geographic and cultural belonging and the constant consumer change found in western consumer society.
